Stump Grinding in Gainesville, FL

Grinding takes a stump down below grade and leaves a pile of chips. What you do with that pile and the ground underneath decides what the yard looks like next.

What the yard looks like afterward

The grinder turns the stump into chips and works down below ground level. You are left with a mound of wood chips, a shallow dip where the stump stood, and possibly a few surface roots at the edges.

Left alone, a stump can sprout, trip the mower, and take years to rot. Grinding clears the spot and leaves one decision: what happens to the chips.

How the job runs

  1. Confirm what is buried nearby once the 811 marks are in.
  2. Clear rocks and debris from around the stump.
  3. Grind the stump in sweeps to the agreed depth.
  4. Rake the chips into a pile or spread them as mulch.
  5. Walk the spot with you and settle what happens next.

Before the grinder starts

Grinding goes below the surface, so an 811 request goes in first. In Florida that is Sunshine 811. The service is free, and allowing at least two full business days gives utilities time to mark buried lines. Private lines such as sprinklers and irrigation are not marked that way.

Then the area is cleared, the stump is ground in sweeps across the top, and the grind continues to the depth the plan calls for. A lawn, a flower bed, and a new tree each want a different depth, so say what is going in. Worth mentioning before the job:

  • Where sprinkler lines, irrigation wiring, or septic runs sit
  • Your plan for the spot: sod, mulch, or a new plant
  • Any fence, patio, or gate between the stump and the work area

Planting the spot again

If a laurel or water oak failed in that spot, pick the replacement with care. UF/IFAS describes laurel oak as decay-prone and water oak as short-lived, while live oak is among the most wind-resistant and long-lived choices.

We grind stumps in Gainesville, Alachua, High Springs, Newberry, Jonesville, and Micanopy. Call with the species, the stump’s width, and what stands around it, and the job can be planned from there.

Stump Grinding questions

What do I do with the wood chips?

Spread them as mulch in beds, use them on a path, or have the pile moved to a corner of the yard. Thick chips smother grass, so keep them off the lawn.

Can I plant right after the stump is ground?

Yes, once the chips are cleared out and soil is added. Planting straight into a deep pile of loose chips gives roots a poor start, so the pile gets moved first.

What happens to the roots?

Grinding takes the stump and the thick roots near the surface. Deeper roots stay in the ground and break down over time. Some trees sprout from leftover roots, and those shoots are cut back as they appear.
