Tree Service in High Springs, FL

High Springs is river-and-springs country, about 30 minutes from our north Gainesville base. We handle removals, trimming, stumps, and storm damage there.

The town grew up around the railroad

A railroad station and post office opened here in 1884 under the name Santaffey. The town became High Springs in 1888 and incorporated in 1892. Downtown still carries that era: the Priest Theatre opened in 1910, and the old railroad depot now houses the Community Redevelopment Agency office.

The Santa Fe River and its springs shape the surroundings. Poe Springs Park lies about 3 miles west of town, and O’Leno State Park, 6 miles north on US 441, is where the river drops into a sink and resurfaces miles away. Its habitats run from hardwood hammock to river swamp to sandhill.

Away from the downtown grid, many homes sit on multi-acre wooded parcels, with subdivisions such as Heron Landing mixed in. The town counted 3,863 people in 2000 and 6,215 in 2020.

Trees and storms around High Springs

Hurricane Irma damaged Poe Springs Park in 2017, and it did not reopen until May 2018. Storms find the weak trees first, and laurel oak, with its decay and hollowing, is among the species most often felled in hurricanes.

On wooded acreage, a fallen tree can block the only drive out or take down a fence, and a snapped limb can hang over a roof. Emergency Tree Service covers trees on houses, cars, fences, and drives, and Stump Grinding clears what is left afterward.

Field notes from High Springs

  • Poe Springs sends about 45 million gallons of water a day into the Santa Fe River.
  • O’Leno State Park was developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s.
  • The Florida Springs Institute is headquartered in High Springs.

Getting here from north Gainesville

High Springs is 30 minutes and 20 miles from our base. The route follows US 441 through Alachua, then Santa Fe Boulevard and NE 1st Avenue into town. Properties toward O’Leno or Poe Springs add more miles.

High Springs tree questions

Does High Springs require a permit to cut a tree?

The city has a Tree Removal Permit Application, handled through its Planning Department. Which trees need one depends on the city’s land development code, so check with the Planning Department before a large tree comes down.

What about property outside the city limits?

Land outside the city limits but still in Alachua County falls under the county’s tree permit, or another county’s if the parcel lies in Gilchrist or Columbia County. In Alachua County, the County Forester’s office handles those permits.

Can you grind a stump left from an earlier removal?

Yes. Stump Grinding is its own service, so a stump left from an earlier job or a fallen tree can be done on its own. Call (727) 486-1206 and tell us the size and where it sits.
