Tree Service in Micanopy, FL
Micanopy covers about a square mile, with a historic downtown and live oaks throughout. It is 25 minutes south of our north Gainesville base, and we cover removals, trimming, stump grinding, and storm calls there.
Cholokka Boulevard and the historic district
Settled around 1817 as Wantons and renamed Micanopy in 1834, the town incorporated in 1837 and again in 1858. Its downtown historic district joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, and the Micanopy Historical Society museum occupies the Thrasher Warehouse on Cholokka Boulevard.
Live oaks and moss-covered buildings mark the downtown, where antique shops, books, and crafts fill the storefronts. Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park lies within a mile of town, with oak domes and live oak hammocks on its moist uplands.
Micanopy had 648 residents at the 2020 census, up from 600 in 2010, in a total area of 1.1 square miles. The 1991 Michael J. Fox film Doc Hollywood was shot on these streets.

Caring for old live oaks
Live oaks hold up in wind better than most trees, but they still drop limbs, so UF/IFAS advises pruning them in the off-season. Around Micanopy’s historic roofs and moss-covered buildings, a heavy limb is the thing to watch.
The Town of Micanopy has a Tree Committee whose duties include keeping an inventory of specimen trees. A large oak in town may be on that list, which is worth asking Town Hall about before any removal.

Micanopy tree questions
Does Micanopy require a permit to remove a tree?
The Town has its own tree rules, and a Tree Removal Permit Application is posted on the town website. The size cutoffs are the town’s to set, so ask Town Hall before a large oak comes down.
Is Micanopy in Alachua County’s tree permit area?
No. Micanopy is an incorporated town, so the county’s permit for unincorporated areas does not apply inside its limits. Parcels just outside them fall under the county and its County Forester’s office.
Can you take down a dead oak that stands close to an old house?
Tree Removal covers dead, leaning, and storm-damaged trees. Call (727) 486-1206 with the tree’s height, how close it stands to the house, and what is around it, and we will plan the cut.
